View Article  Keith Davies returns to Hessle

This week at Hessle Town Hall

This week's news is that this coming Wednesday (July 1st), we are set for a great night because KEITH DAVIES from Revolution Dance in Manchester is coming to Hessle to teach both the Beginner and Intermediate classes. Keith is an excellent teacher and a fantastic professionally trained dancer.  This is certainly a class night not to be missed!

We are SO lucky at Hessle to have such a high standard of teaching from visiting teachers week in and week out.  Some of you will know that it was Keith Davies who opened Hessle Modern Jive Club back in November 2007.  We were determined back then, as indeed we still are today, to get the very best dance teachers coming to take classes at Hessle and Keith is one of the very best in the UK.  He is in great demand and we have been trying to book him to come back for over a year now!

Now that we have managed it, please do come along and experience his classes, watch him dance and even get to dance with him (ladies!).

View Article  Friday Freestyle at Goole "It just keeps getting better!"

After last Friday's Freestyle at Goole, two people told us, "It just keeps getting better."  Thank you!

On the last Friday Freestyle (in April), the air-conditioning broke down during the evening and we also found that the floor was a bit sticky from a previous function where drinks had been spilt on it.  So we made a special effort this time to get it back to how it should be and used to be...

We provided seven large fans and three industrial air-blowers and as it turned out, the air-con was working this time as well!  So, needless to say, no one complained of being too hot...  And the floor was thoroughly cleaned and buffed by Claire before anyone arrived - no complaints about the floor either this time.

A great time was had by all, so thank you all to those who came along and we're looking forward to the next Friday Freestyle which is on 10th July 2009 because the second Friday in June has already been booked by a private party.

View Article  This week (Wednesday 6th May) we have another new teacher to Hessle Jive...

This week our dance teacher this week is Sarah who regularly teachers at Tadcaster Jive.  This will be her first time that she has taught at Hessle Jive, so we hope that you will come along to support her and give her a great welcome.

Sarah's partner is Chris, who is the organiser of 'HUGE' and many of you will know him as the advanced dance teacher at Tadcaster Jive.  HUGE is a fantastic venue (the best one I've ever been to - apart from Hessle Town Hall of course...  ;o)), as can be seen from the picture below:-

The venue is the Tall Trees Hotel at Yarm and it has the biggest dance floor in North Yorkshire (648 square meters).  The first freestyle there in March was a 'huge' success (what else...) and many people booked immediately for the second freestyle which is going to be held on Friday 26th June.  Stacks of free parking, two bars, great DJ's, air-conned and this time it's going to be even BIGGER with two rooms for dancing.

The door entry price for the freestyle is £10 BUT if you book it at Hessle Jive tomorrow night and get your ticket from Chris it will be just £8.  Yarm is just outside Middlesborough.

Click here for location and directions

Chris has made a deal with the hotel for those attending the freestyle who would like to stay overnight, so that for just £85, two people can share an Executive Twin or Double Room and that price will include two entries to the freestyle as well, so that's quite a good deal and I can personally recommend the accommodation and the super full English breakfast!

For those who want to share or pool cars, see Claire on the door and we will try to work something out to keep the travel costs down and make it an even more sociable occasion.

We are delighted to announce that Mark and Tracey from Sheffield have accepted our invitation to come along to Hessle Town Hall on Wednesday 29th April, 2009.  They teach all over the UK and they will be taking both Beginners' and Intermediate classes for us this week.  We especially sought them because of their superb skills in aerial dance techniques (lifts); besides being lovely people and fantastic Modern Jive dancers, they can really do the business when it comes to the energetic stuff...

During the evening they will be giving us a cabaret dance which demonstrates aerial dancing and they will include just one SMALL lift in the Intermediate class which will be optional so if you do feel that lifting your partner off the ground or being lifted off the ground is not for you, then no worries, it's not compulsory!  It's great fun to watch though!!

This is a class night not to be missed!  Wednesday 29th April, 2009.

This week (on Wednesday, April 8th) we are thrilled to have JATINDA returning to Hessle as our Special Guest Teacher. His warm personality, excellent teaching and original Latino dance style will make this a night not to be missed.

His last visit (see below on 11th June last year) was a phenomenal success and we have been asked repeatedly for him to return, so come along this week and enjoy putting a touch of Latin style into your dancing!

View Article  Gus "Using the Floor" (Wed 1st April, 2009)

This coming Wednesday (1st April) sees the return of Gus and he is going to give his second 'taster' of his next workshop.

Gus’s new project to run a Taster Workshop on the 1st Wednesday classnight of every other month got off to a fantastic start on the 1st Wednesday of January. The hall was very well attended and everyone had a great night.

Gus is a very popular Special Guest Teacher and before the end of his beginner class his follow up workshop was already fully booked and had a waiting list!!  Those who managed to get a place were not disappointed.  His second Taster workshop Classnight and follow up Sunday workshop is already  causing great excitement and looks really interesting and useful.

This workshop and taster class is called "Using the Floor."

You know the feeling when your favourite track starts to play; you head out onto the dance floor only to find everyone else has too and every move you can think of to do seems to mean you colliding with the people dancing near you? Or it’s the beginning of the night and there is loads of space but you feel your moves aren’t big enough to fill it?  Well Gus’s workshop will give you more choices.  Gus and Lynsey plan on showing you some moves that can be done in a small dance floor area but still look good. Then they are going to give you some moves that will have you travelling around the dance floor plus tips and techniques on how and when to use each type and ways of communicating within the dance to avoid collisions.

Some improver moves will also be taught to give added confidence in individual ability and to add a bit of a challenge to the lead and follow.
This workshop is all about adapting your own dancing to suit what is going on around you so that you can still get maximum enjoyment however busy or empty the floor is.

Like all of their workshops the actual content of the Sunday workshop will be dependant upon who attends on the day – individual attention and small gender balanced groups are what makes the Sunday follow on workshop so useful.

The workshop content is tailored to give the maximum benefit to everybody there and progress is so much faster than in a normal weekly class.Make a note of these dates in your diary

Taster class 1st April
Workshop 19th  April

The  Sunday workshop is also at Hessle Town hall with Registration at 11am and Finishing at 4pm.

The normal cost of a workshop is £25 but Hessle members get admission for £20 BUT like last time, Gus is offering a Special price to Hessle members if booked on 1st April of only £15.

So, don’t miss the Special Class this Wednesday and if you fancy the follow on workshop then make sure you book early!!

Those of you who attended the last workshop and have not yet obtained a video of the recap of the workshop, please see Rod next Wednesday.  The video will be available for just 50p.  We plan to make a video of each workshop, so that if you complete the entire course, you will have quite a collection of tips/tricks and excellent advice which should transform you dancing!

If you are on our email newsletter list, you will already know most of this but not everyone has emails so for the benefit of those still living in the last century...

Lots going on in March, not least of which is the Friday Freestyle at Goole on 13th March (yes, Friday the 13th...)  8 pm until midnight and if you've been before then you'll know it's a cracking good night out and Hessle Modern Jive club members get a discount on entry, so they only pay £5 instead of £8.  See Claire if you've lost your membership card and we'll give you another.  It's worth doing because your membership card will be getting you discounts on dancing related products and entry to various functions (to be announced but see below...)  Oh and don't forget that if you want to make a dinner/dance of it, then the food at the Vikings Hotel at Goole is very good (and good value too); several of us are having a meal there before going into the freestyle room.

Matt Judge is coming to visit us again and he is offering a special deal to Hessle Modern Jive Club members (got your card??) so that instead of the usual £35 entry for an entire day of workshops and evening freestyle at Pudsey Civic Hall, our members get in for £25.  Click here for full details of this great day out.

There are a number of events happening this month at other venues which Hessle members will be going to and could well be of interest to you.  Click here to see details

Next week sees the return of the very popular Kevin Hardy who has been a Special Guest Teacher for us a few times now.  This week (Wednesday 4th March) Kevin will be taking the Beginners' and Intermediate classes but there will be no cabaret as it will be a regular class night.  Still a night not to be missed though as Kevin (from Manchester) is a professional dance teacher and one of the best in the UK.  We are privileged to have him come back to take our classes for us.

View Article  Don't miss the first taster!

We can now announce the details of the workshop which follows up on this week's theme for Gus' taster class:-

DRESSING UP THE BASICS WORKSHOP

Sunday Feb 22nd 11am to 4pm

Designed to take some of the moves you probably already know and love and add a bit of extra flair to make you stand out from the crowd.

Starting with the basics of how lead and follow can be used in dance Gus will then teach the technique required to carry out some of the more common moves smoothly. Each move will be taught independently with concentration on differing entry and exit possibilities and then styling points will be added in for people to experiment with. Some improver (intermediate) moves will also be taught to give added confidence in individual ability and to add a bit of a challenge to the lead and follow.

This workshop is all about giving you the confidence to try different things whilst knowing it will be mainly based upon moves you are already comfortable with. By using this technique dancers will be able to adapt their normal dance repertoire to give it their own personalisation.

Like all of our workshops the actual content will be dependent upon who attends on the day as we aim to tailor the workshop content to give the maximum benefit to everybody there.

COSTS

Taster class (on Wednesday 4th February) will remain the same as our usual class night (£7)

Workshop (on Sunday 22nd February - 11 am to 4 pm)  **Please note that workshops give more individual attention and so numbers will be limited.  Early booking advised and entry is by prior booking only.**

Normal admission £25 (Standard National Workshop rate)

Hessle members admission £20

**Special price to Hessle Modern Jive Club members if they book/reserve on evening of taster class of 4th February - £15.**

View Article  Welcome back Anne!

It was lovely to see Anne back on the stage at Hessle Jive last Wednesday night (22nd October) demonstrating with her partner John, our regular dance teacher.  Anne has been in South Africa visiting relatives since the beginning of the year and we have missed her!  It was good to have her back and especially to see that as a result of an operation, her elbow is now fully recovered after the disastrous break she had jus t before she went away.  We are so pleased that she is able to dance once again without pain and discomfort.

While Anne has been away, John soldered on using our crew members (Anna or Tracey - thank you ladies!) and sometime Pam and experienced dancer from his own club (Harrogate Jive) - thank you Pam.

John and Anne are very popular with Hessle members and as usual, their intermediate class last week consisted of excellent moves which were enthusiastically taken up by many in the following freestyle session; a sure sign of a good class.   John's very clear and detailed instructions combined Anne’s graceful moves and lovely smile, make John and Annes' classes a joy to take part in.

You can see John and Anne on the fourth Wednesday of every month at Hessle Jive.  They also have class nights at their own venue every Monday night at Harrogate Jive (St. Georges Social Club, St. Georges RoadHarrogate.  They also teach at the Engine Shed at Wetherby twice a month.

View Article  Thank you for making it a great freestyle night last Friday.

We would like to thank all of those who came along to our first Vikings Hotel, Goole freestyle last Friday.  It was a very well attended event and we've had lots of feedback (thank you again!) telling us how much you enjoyed it and how good Claire is at finding and putting together wonderful sequences of good tracks to dance to.  We believe that no matter how good a venue is, unless the music makes you want to get-up-and-boogie, the freestyle won't be a good 'un.  Experienced dancers make the best Modern Jive DJ's!  Well done Claire who did a great job ensuring that the dance floor was always busy.

It was great to see faces from several other clubs turn up for our first independent freestyle, dancers came from far and wide, many of whom were incredibly good dancers too.  Lots of very welcome beginners as well!  It's good to go to classes every week but a freestyle really does give you the opportunity to put into practice all the moves you have been learning, or at least have a go!  Nobody minds if you get it wrong, and our freestyles are all about being sociable events where there is a bar and a lounge for those who like to chat with friends.

By popular demand we plan to hold one of these freestyle at The Vikings Hotel in Goole every month, on the second Friday of each month but because of previous bookings at this popular venue, we can't begin until the next year, on the second Friday in January (Friday 9th January, 2009).  We have booked for every month next year for second Fridays but we were unable to book the venue for February and June.  We'll keep you posted with reminders nearer the time for each freestyle via this website and members newsletters.

We hope you are finding the benefits of being members of Hessle Modern Jive club worthwhile and we think you will agree that £5 entry for Hessle Members for a 4 hour non-stop dancing on a Friday or Saturday night is excellent value for money.  Incidentally, the super bar meals at The Vikings are really good value too if you were thinking of having a meal or a snack before a Freestyle.

Happy dancing!

Rod.

View Article  New Sound Equipment

** New Sound Equipment **

When we started Hessle Jive Club, almost a year ago now, we purchased second hand audio equipment which was quite good quality and served us well - up until last week - when the bass on the amplifier started to cut in and cut out again towards the end of the evening.  We have had several minor repairs made to it over the last few months so we thought that the time had now come to invest in some new sound equipment and last week we went out to look at some really good quality sound systems.

We found ourselves a superb system, which is more than double in the power output than our previous system, is state-of-the-art electronics, computer driven and has 4 top class speakers capable of handling 600W output.  This week (Wednesday 27th August) we set it up for the first time and the results were fantastic which was confirmed when quite a few members came up to our DJ (Tracy) and told her how much they enjoyed the music and the quality of the sound

Comments were made of the fantastic range of sounds, from the driving bass sounds to the highest frequencies.  The hall filled with super music and the teacher's voice could be heard very clearly at the back of the hall as well.  When we don't have a hired DJ, the music is researched, selected, purchased, each track individually edited and tested by Claire, so all thanks are due to Claire for the tracks that we play; well done Claire!  With Claire's music selections and the fantastic new amplifier and speakers, we are as good as it gets for any dance venue in the country now.

As and when funds allow, we will continue to improve on our equipment.  We recently added a number of fans and powerful air-circulators to assist keeping us cool.  We plan soon to add even more and better lighting effects to add to the already great club atmosphere in the hall.  It takes time, we still have to pay our teachers well to keep them coming along and now occasional visiting DJ too, but we continue to go from strength to strength and are busy preparing plans for some future events.  Watch this space...

Meanwhile, happy dancing!

View Article  Price Increase

Price Increase

We are sorry to inform you, but due to rising costs and updating of equipment, we are putting up the price of admission to Hessle Jive to £7, commencing on the 20th August 2008. The cost of life-time membership will still remain at £2.

This new fee will also bring us in line with other Modern Jive Clubs around the country. We hope that you will continue to support us and as you know, we are a non-profit making organisation so any money we do make goes to pay our dance teachers, updating our sound and light equipment and making sure that you all have a great venue for dancing.

Thank you, see you Wednesday.

We would like to thank all of those who came along and supported our Freestyle on 27th June, it was a fantastic night out and a sell out.

Our thanks must also go to Carol of the Hase Pub who prepared the wonderful buffet and the staff behind the bar who worked hard all night serving us drinks, the Beverley Dancewear company who came along and put out a stunning array of discounted dance shoes with additional special 25% discount for our members who purchased that night.

Also our thanks to Peter of The Ski & Rock Co who brought along with his promotional videos and leaflets and finally to Tequila Sunrise the band who came all the way from Hessle to be there!

I dare anyone to say that they ever went to a better freestyle than we put on that night for £6!  It's only because our members turn out in number each and every week that we have been able to provide such value, well done everyone and here's to the next event (watch this space...)

Also, please see the entry below regarding the charity raffle, well done everyone!

View Article  Charity Raffle

I would like to say a huge thank you to all the people who kindly bought Raffle tickets at the Freestyle on Friday 27th June. We raised a grand total of £200! Thank you so much and special thanks to Tracy for her help in selling the tickets and for getting the fabulous prizes and to Chris Ellis for his help in selling the tickets!

The money raised is to be presented to Dr Babu and Sister Dyer at the Lawrence Unit at Bridlington Hospital, I am just waiting for them to confirm a date for the presentation. Dr Babu and Sister Dyer carry out an amazing procedure at this unit, called a Capsule Endoscopy. Usually this test is done on people who have had an unexplained bleed from their digestive system and the usual tests such as Endoscopy, Colonoscopy and Barium Meal & Follow Through have not been able to locate the site of the bleed.

Each capsule is disposable, 2.5cm long and contains a camera. The patient has detector pads stuck onto their abdomen and these pads link into a small receiver worn by the patient. The test takes 8 hours and the patient can walk around during the test. The Sister also has a receiver pack so she can monitor the progress of the capsule.

The images are collected onto a DVD and Dr Babu then has to read 8 hours worth of DVD to be able to make a diagnosis. The set up costs are enormous for any unit to do this test and the running costs are expensive too. Each capsule costs £400 - they are only used once!

Because I had to go through this procedure, I felt I wanted to give something in return. I was rather shocked to learn that this test does not receive funding from the NHS, instead the unit relies totally on The League Of Friends (a nationwide group of people who fund raise tirelessly for equipment needed by the NHS). I decided I wanted to do something, so I organised a raffle.

Thank you so much once again for your support! I think Hessle Jive is a great club and we have such lovely members, as you have just proved! Sister Dyer has asked me to pass on their thanks too, so a huge thank you to you all!

Our thanks to Matt and Sue Judge who came along to Hessle Town Hall last Sunday (8th June) and held two workshops for our members.

The beginners workshop last three hours at the end of which many of the participants expressed a renewed confidence in their dancing abilities.  Matt was able to give individual attention to any student that required help with their techniques and style.  The kind of groundwork that simply isn’t possible cover on at class night.  If you missed the beginners workshop and would like to be included on the next one, please let us know as we will not be arranging another until there is sufficient demand from our members for one.

The Blues workshop was a very enjoyable 3 hours and again, style and technique was the order of the day and leaning new Blues moves was only part of the workshop.  For those that took part in the workshop, a video of Matt and Sue dancing the moves taught is available from rod@hesslejive.co.uk.

Please let us know if there is any other type of workshop that you would like and if there is sufficient demand, we will arrange it.  Some have already asked for a dips/drops/seducers workshop.  Anyone second that?

Thank you all!  We’ve had so many wonderful messages congratulating us on arranging a fantastic freestyle, we’re really chuffed that our members and visitors had such a good time.

The tickets were a sell-out and we were delighted to see so many ‘faces’ – professional dancers, DJ’s, club owners, etc., from the dance world turn up to our freestyle at Hessle.

The hog roast meal, with coleslaw, salad and fruit/cream desert proved to be very popular and there were still plenty of seconds on offer.

The Jive Aces were roundly applauded after each number and Ken (the Bass Player) told me that the band were very impressed with the club, ‘one of the best Modern Jive Clubs we’ve ever played at’ and the band were very pleased with the warmth of the reception they received from everyone.

In the usual style, they played their socks off and staged lots of antics.  They took two encores, they had the place jumpin’ – literally!  After finishing their set they danced with our ladies and I have to say, they can dance well too!

Thank you Jive Aces for being such a professional and entertaining band.  Fantastic musicians and really nice blokes as well!  Shall we book them again?  Let us know, yes?

View Article  A fantastic time had by all this week.

Kevin Hardy sent a text message thanking us for the invite to Hessle Town Hall.  He asked if we would tell everyone that he had a lovely time that he felt most welcome.  The pleasure was ours Kevin!  Thank you and also to Jenny who is an incredible dancer as well.

If you missed the night, you can open the link on the left and watch both demonstration dances.  One was performed to demonstrate musicality (or how to interpret and dance to the music).  I thought Kevin was very brave in letting us select which track to play and he had no idea what he was going to be dancing to until the music began.  He gives a commentary during his demonstration.

The cabaret dance was fantastic considering that Jenny lives in Bradford and Kevin hails from Manchester; so they didn't have much time to practice this routine together, about three quarters of an hour only.  It's amazing what you can do after dancing for six weeks eh?  (JOKE!).

The evening was very well attended and our policy now is not to advertise for new members as we don't want to be overcrowded.  It's just about right as it is now.  The club is run for the benefit of our members, not for profit, so having enough space to dance is more important to us that the door takings.  What profits are made are allocated long before they come in!  We hope to soon have some air-cooling equipment (not just fans) which now that the warmer weather is approaching, I'm sure will be appreciated by everyone.

Unhappily I have to report that the Town Hall powers that be have been on our backs again, this time because the beautifully refurbished floor was damaged by somebody wearing stiletto heels on our first weeks use.  We did send out a newsletter and put a sign up but they went unnoticed unfortunately.  We are now obliged by the council to inspect footwear as people come in!  As long as there are no steel capped boots or stilettos, no problem, preferable with soft soles (no metal bits in the soles).  To be fair, the council has invested quite a lot of money in that floor and we get the benefit of dancing on one of the best dance floors in the country, so please take care of the floor, no dragging seats or tables along the floor please.

I was told last week that our future use of the hall is in jeopardy if our members continue to block the fire exits with their vehicles or cause damage to the floor.  I'm sorry to be a harping on but it would be an awful shame if we lost this wonderful venue for the actions of one or two wouldn't it?  Please keep an eye out for anyone wearing inappropriate shoes or dragging anything across the floor so that they can be gently reminded of the consequences.  Thank you everyone for your cooperation.

We apologise for the delay in uploading the videos of the Beginners and Intermediate Classes taken by Kevin, the webmaster has been ill, but they will go up before next Wednesday.

Happy Dancing.
